TERM 2
WEEK 5
WEEK 5
Our Father’s Day Breakfast and Chapel is a fantastic example of the St Paul’s community in action! As Principal, to be part of such a positive and supportive parent community is energising and is an important ingredient that sets a solid platform for us to drive growth in all areas of our school. It also reinforces how powerful a supportive community is when everyone is accepted, valued and connected.
The Importance of Community
It highlights the need for us to come-together and build relationships at St Paul’s following a challenging COVID impacted past two-years.
When the pandemic interrupted our lives and changed the way we live, this meant that suddenly many of our young people’s main sources of connection with peers and extended family members were removed overnight without warning and remained significantly disrupted over the next two years. Throughout our existence, humans have sought out relationships with others and built communities to belong to. We have a basic emotional and biological need for connection. Belonging is the feeling of security and support that gives us that sense of acceptance and connection to others.
When we don’t feel connected, or have our need for belonging met, this causes a deep seated distress. Both loneliness and disconnection are negative emotional states that can feel painful and sometimes unbearable. When our basic need for belonging isn’t met, it is impossible for our brain to focus on other things, such as learning. For young people, teenagers in particular, this desire is abundantly strong. Teenagers place a high value on their social ties, acceptance, care and support from others, especially their peers.
Students who have a sense of belonging will experience feelings of security, identity and community, which in turn supports their academic, psychological and social development. When young people come together again after a period of instability, there is a period of adjustment. Whilst the rules of the group may be established, acceptance remains paramount and can therefore mean some behaviours can become far from rational. Their ability to tolerate distress and control impulsive actions is reduced as they haven’t yet got full access to the part of the brain that can help give them perspective and inhibit their impulses. These factors combined, leave them open to being vulnerable, often making choices or becoming involved in situations they might not ordinarily consider.

Every Friday so far this year, we have joined together as a school for a 15 minute assembly as part of our Learner Profile focus. This term we have been talking about being curious.
The areas of ‘I am Curious’ are:
+ I can tackle problems creatively
+ I can think outside the box
+ I can ask questions to expand my learning
Our students definitely are curious people. Here are a few of the things that they are curious about:
What animals did humans find first? What would the world be like if there was no sin? What will the future be like? Will there be any new colours in the future? I wonder if St Kilda will win a grand final again? What will I look like when I’m older? I wonder if we will ever find another planet like earth? What job will I do when I’m older?
We look forward to designing some posters about the second point above, ‘I can think outside the box’ to show what this looks like.
Last Thursday and Friday, we enjoyed doing some Literacy learning together as a staff and with St John’s also. From January 2023, the new English and Mathematics syllabus K-2 must be taught in all NSW schools. The diagram below shows the organisation of the outcomes and content for English K-2. This learning opportunity for our team, perfectly aligns with the new approaches to teaching English. We look forward to trialling and implementing, starting next term.
A massive thank you to Mrs Debbie Zweck for her hard work in organising another successful book parade and fair. We do love celebrating the joy that books bring!
It was great to have so many special men in our lives come to our Father’s Day Breakfast and Chapel Service this week. Thank you, Dads! We really appreciate you taking the time out to come and further build connections with your little people but also our community.
Blessings,

We have had a book study on the go the last two weeks in K-2. If you’ve never read the book by Oliver Jeffers, ‘Stuck’, we really recommend it! We’ve been exploring how to recount and sequence events and next week will be having a Big Write where students will need to write a recount and explain, in order, events that occurred. We’ve also looked at expanding our vocabulary by looking at how authors use verbs and adjectives to make our writing more interesting.
In Maths, we have been talking all things ‘Mass’. We’ve been using different words/terms to help explain weight, greater than, less than, heavier, lighter, kilograms and grams. If you’re in the kitchen, outside, holding a toy, whatever it may be, it would be great if you could have some discussions about mass with your child to reinforce what we’ve been learning in class.
We are having a short 3-week unit for PBL this term. It’s based around the PDH syllabus and students will be learning about how they can help make familiar environments healthy, safe and active. We will be exploring what healthy foods look like, safety gear in different contexts and organising an activity that promotes respectful relationships with peers through interaction and cooperation.
We had a fantastic time in Melbourne with our friends from St John's. It was a busy two days with lots to see and do. Thankyou to Dave Forland for being our bus driver for the trip, we appreciate you taking time out to come along and get us all home safe again.
SAVE THE DATE
3/4/5/6 are busy gathering ideas for a Sports Colours Day to have some fun on the last day of term and raise extra funds for Gifts of Grace. Keep the afternoon of the 23rd September free to come along and join us!
As part of their recent excursion to the national capital, Year 5/6 students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school on completion of the excursion.
St Paul's reduced the cost of the excursion in anticipation of the generous rebate.

When it came time to decide which charity should receive their recent fundraising efforts, the students decided they would like to bless the Henty Lions Club. School Captain Aaron Lieschke handed a cheque to Henty Lions Club, represented by Mr Noel Stein. The Lions Club was first formed in Australia 75 years ago, and we are blessed to have an active Lions Club in the Henty community. The aim of Lions is to give back to their community through an array of community-based programs and initiatives.
On Tuesday the 23rd we had a visit from “Just-Dance Justin” from Freestyle Dance Ministry! Justin came to share his passion for dance in the hope of inspiring students in their faith, as well as assisting them in exploring new and exciting ways of worship.
The students learnt a high energy dance routine comprised of 5 different songs, named “Unshakeable” to signify the Unshakeable faith we have in Jesus. The music was pumping during the “Freestyle Circle” activity where students got to showcase their unique moves and encourage each other to ‘take a step of faith’ out of their comfort zone, into the dance circle.
When students needed a breather, Justin then shared some stories of how God personally told Justin to use dance for His mission in Australia, as Justin then encouraged the students to go “All In” for God when it came to using their own gifts, for His glory. Justin plans to visit St Paul’s Henty again next year as part of his annual visit to the Albury-Wodonga area, with the aim of further encouraging the new ‘dancing disciples’ at St Paul’s through ongoing relationship with the school.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Major Raffle. We raised $1,310!!
Congratulations to our prize winners:

Operation Christmas Child is a hands-on way for Australians and New Zealanders to bless children in need around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and other fun gifts. The gift-filled shoeboxes are then collected and distributed to children in over 100 countries in the Name of Jesus Christ.
After receiving a shoebox gift, many children have the opportunity to enrol in The Greatest Journey – a 12-lesson Bible study course that guides children through what it means to faithfully follow Jesus Christ.
The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to provide God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
In previous years we have sent a shoebox home with each family - but this year we are going to do it a little different! Over the upcoming school holidays we are asking families to start buying suitable gifts. Early in Term 4 we are going to pool our gifts and the students are going to pack the shoeboxes together.
More information will come home with students with gift suggestions and timeframes.
Year 5/6 students were recently invited to design a cover for the upcoming edition of the Lions Henty & District Telephone & Business Directory.
Entries for the front cover of the Henty Phonebook are on display in Dales Electrical. Members of the community are invited to vote for their favourite design.
Voting slips are in Dale's Electrical, please put your name on the slip and the number of the drawing you think should go on front cover.
Voting closes 20th September

We will have a specially designated recycling bin in the lunch area for refundable bottles, and we would be happy to add yours to our collection. All money raised will be made available for the students to put towards resources and equipment, which they will collaborate their spending ideas with teaching staff.
