This week, Re Bothe from St John’s, Hollie and I travelled to QLD to participate in a Lutheran Education Australia Contemporary Learning Tour.

It was a powerful few days of reflection, curiosity and learning!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Contemporary learning methods emphasize active student participation, engagement and collaboration. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning, explore topics of interest and develop critical thinking skills. Contemporary learning recognises that each student has unique strengths, weaknesses and learning styles.

Contemporary learning encourages creativity and innovation by providing students with opportunities to think outside the box, express their ideas and engage in open-ended tasks. It nurtures imagination, problem-solving and entrepreneurial skills, enabling students to develop a mindset that embraces innovation and adaptability.

Over three days, we were able to immerse ourselves in a range of schools who are basing their learning styles in a contemporary model. We were challenged, inspired and were in constant discussion with peers about inspiring students to connect to their learning.

What are Contemporary Learning Tours?

High impact schools provide supportive, creative and inspiring learning environments for students to have opportunities to highly develop contemporary skills so that they can be positive contributors in the world they live. The research and success stories around the world, shows that the focus should not just be of content driven schooling, but on more experiential based pedagogies supporting the growth of skills such as critical thinking, natural curiosity, collaboration, deep empathy, entrepreneurship, innovation, resilience and grit.

HAPPENINGS WITH HOLLIE

What’s the saying, A picture speaks a thousand words?

I’ve had such rich experiences over the past two weeks, both at St Paul’s and collaborating with other Lutheran educators from around Australia in QLD this week, that I don’t think words will do it justice.

Lunchtime challenges = teamwork

Blessings,

Hollie

Pictures do speak a thousand words and I’d like to finish with one final image that speaks happiness to me. The image below is of most of our school in a ‘Yarning circle’ during a wellbeing assembly to discuss what it means to listen first, show empathy and kindness to each other. Circles are a way to listen, share and discuss things that are important and to address some of the issues we may face. There’s no front or back in a circle, no right or wrong, no rules to say you have to share. Rather, an opportunity to learn from and with each other, whilst growing empathy for those around us.

We’re doing some wonderful things here at our school. You’re never too old to learn and what a blessing the last two weeks have been for me as a leader in this inspiring community.

I’ve recently returned from a Learning Tour with Brad and a colleague from Jindera to the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

We are doing some really great things in the teaching and learning space already and I’m genuinely excited where our contemporary learning journey will lead. I’ve got so many takeaways, however some images here are a few that awoke and sparked curiosity and creativity for me…

Lunchtime fun = friendships strengthened

YEAR K & 1

If you have 3 different coloured blocks, how many different towers can you make? How many could you make with four different coloured blocks?

These were the questions posed to the class, and they are really showing great problem solving skills, to come up with the amount of answers they did!

On Wednesday, 24th May, the K/1 class headed to the Henty Library for National Simultaneous Storytime. We joined Jo and Susan to watch the story “The Speedy Sloth’, read at the Singapore Zoo, then we stayed for a craft and jigsaw puzzle session.

Thanks to Jo and Susan for the invitation.

On Monday, we were lucky enough to have Reggie (Mrs Phelp’s dog) join us for the day. Reggie loved stamina reading in the afternoon and was happy to listen to the children reading stories to her!

YEAR 2, 3 & 4

Blessings,

Hollie, Felicity & Debbie

The 2/3/4 classroom has been a busy but curious place as of late. We’ve had many opportunities to stretch our thinking in different ways.

Our writing goals are being ticked off and new ones are being created.

Cuddling chickens fills us with happiness.

Our new PBL unit has been launched and what great fun it was!

It was terrific to get out in the garden and renew our vegetable gardens with fresh soil.

We’ve planted a variety of vegetables and herbs and will definitely keep you updated on the progress and learning journey.

YEAR 5 & 6

We had a great time on our class camp last week! It was rewarding to see links between our camp and our PBL projects. We are excited to be able to share our projects at our PBL Showcase this Friday in the hall at 2:00pm.

Last Wednesday, Year 5 & 6 got up early to go to Ballarat. We arrived at the Botanical Gardens for lunch. We went to the Eureka Centre where we saw the original Eureka flag. It was huge! That afternoon we arrived at Sovereign Hill. After dinner we went to the Aura light and sound show. It was amazing!

The next day, we walked around Sovereign Hill. We learnt about the Gold Rush and how it was like to be a miner living on the diggings. We had heaps of fun watching a gold bar being melted and enjoyed learning how to pan for gold. Some students even found some gold! That night we went bowling. It was heaps of fun.

The next day, we went to the Deborah Mine in Bendigo and went 61m underground! We learnt about mining techniques and equipment they used back in the gold rush. 5 & 6 had a lot of fun on school camp!

Thank you to Andrew and Paul for driving our bus.

Many blessings,

Miss Katie Ridley

There will be a second showcase on Monday at 2:00pm for those who miss Friday.
