TERM 2
WEEK 5
WEEK 5
Earlier this week, I connected into a webinar with Dr Michael Carr- Gregg with the support of Lutheran Principals Australia and SchoolTV. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists, author of 14 books, broadcaster and a specialist in corporate mental health, families, parenting, children, adolescents and the use of technology for mental health.
Dr Carr-Gregg provided some recent data on the national health of our young people, the implications for educational communities and the media’s influence on the wellbeing of individuals.
Positive Mental Health
In his presentation, Dr Carr-Gregg encouraged those present to share the following practical advice with our parents/carers:
Bark
For use on Mobile Phones
Parental controls reimagined
Advanced content monitoring for all your kid’s devices
Cold Turkey
For use with PC’s
Your future self will thank you.
Block websites, games and applications to boost your productivity and reclaim your free time.
Self Control
For use with Macs
Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blocklist, and click "Start." Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites—even if you restart your computer or delete the application.
I am extremely grateful that we have a strong team that continually invest in the positive wellbeing of our students here at St Paul’s. I am also extremely grateful that we are a Christian school and gain our strength from the good news of Jesus’ word.
1 Corinthians 15
Now, brothers and sisters, I want you to remember the Good News I told you. You received that Good News message, and you continue to base your life on it.
The last one is rather topical with the current national discussions around the use of social media by young people and the increasing age restrictions. Earlier this month, the Federal Government announced a $6.5m commitment to trial an age-verification program that will restrict children's exposure to inappropriate online content, including pornography and potentially social media.
As parents managing our children’s use of technology and their access of the internet can be a challenge and potentially, not very popular with them. But Dr Carr-Gregg stated that we, as the adults and parents/carers, need to be the prefrontal cortex, while they are developing theirs.
Below are some quality safeguards for parents:
"The wellbeing of today's youth has never been more challenging."

Assessment Weeks
The last two weeks have been designated across all three classes for the completion of assessment tasks. Assessment is an essential component of the teaching and learning cycle. Assessment for, assessment as and assessment of learning are approaches that enable teachers to gather evidence and make judgements about student achievement. It’s been a big couple of weeks for our students, but they’ve all done well. It has been great to see growth across multiple areas of learning. These assessments plus regular, ongoing assessment all form the basis for reporting and for directing learning paths.
Uniform
With the seasons clearly changing, we are no longer making hats compulsory at playtimes. However, we encourage students to stay in the habit of having hats at school or in bags so that if we do need them, we have them ready to go.
Lunches
We have had a few students coming to school with hot drinks (tea/hot chocolate) in reusable travel mugs. I ask that students please keep these hot drinks at home rather than bring them to school. We are concerned with the risks associated with hot liquids.
If students want to bring warm food in a small thermos for lunch, this is absolutely fine. Pasta, rice, soup, noodles are all great examples of leftover dinner that can double up for lunch. I just ask that in the case of noodles, that all boiling water is drained before sending it to school. Thanks in advance!
Headphones
A friendly reminder, that if you haven’t sent in headphones for your child to use in class, please do so. We use several programs that require students to listen to instructions. It can make it challenging when there are multiple students having to have their volume turned on. Thank you.
I pray you’re all keeping healthy as the season has turned. Blessings for your week ahead, may it be a terrific one!

School Photos
Our school photo day is fast approaching and will be taking place on Thursday 20th June. Information on payment and ordering will be sent home with your child on Tuesday 11th June. Please get these back in as soon as possible to ensure the day runs smoothly. Students are to wear full school uniform: black shoes, white socks, skort/shorts/tracksuit pants, softshell jacket (if possible). We ask that long sleeve shirts are not worn to school on the day as we often remove jackets as all students are then wearing the same shirt for individual/class/school photo. (Students can then put the shirt on for warmth after photos are finished). We hope that all students will be present on the day!
Working Bee & Social Gathering
Next Friday, 14th June there will be a working bee followed by dinner (Pizza) together at school. There was an email sent about this. Please check it for further information, we will need to know numbers for catering purposes. RSVP to the wonderful Alison.

The K,1 students had a great time dressing as what they would like to be when they grow up. We had a fire person, shearer, carpenter, soldier and sporting greats!
In maths, we have been learning some different strategies to help with our addition, such as using doubles and near doubles. We love to share our strategies, as we are finding that there can often be different ways to come up with the same answer.
Blessings for the week ahead,

Last week, 2/3 began to explore length. We have been estimating and measuring in informal units of length such as popsticks and connector blocks.
This has prepared us for our maths investigation this week called ‘Marble Ramp’.
This investigation is still in process, but we cannot wait to show our marble ramps and share how far our marbles travel with you all soon!
Our learning culminated by having to show the area and perimeter of their chosen items from nature, a pattern showing symmetry, a drawing showing critical understanding of how area/perimeter was found and research highlighting facts about chosen plants in a poster format.
In the investigation ‘It’s only Natural’, students had to create a Maths in Nature display using leaves and flowers collected from our school grounds. They used maths skills including identifying lines of symmetry and number patterns, and estimating and calculating the perimeter and area of irregular shapes. Students used critical thinking skills to explain how they estimated, then calculated the area of their leaves/flowers.
We have completed our Investigation based on the following topics:
Factors, symmetry, place value, area and perimeter.

Last Thursday, the K-3 students had a fantastic day travelling to Scots’ School, Albury to watch their Year 5/6 production of Finding Nemo. It was an amazing performance, and we loved watching Nemo, Marlin, Dory, Bruce the shark and especially the seagulls!
We then had lunch and a play at Oddies Creek Park before heading back to school. It was a wonderful time, which led to some amazing writing the following day.

Week 6
After Chapel, led by the Kinder and Year 1 students, our mum's and grand-mum's were shown how much we love them. Scrumptious morning tea was followed by photos, massage, games and nail therapy. Thank you to all the beautiful women who came along.
What a beautiful blue-sky day for a parade celebrating books.
Thank you for all the effort from parents and students to get in the mood for reading and fun!
On Friday 1st of September, Years 3 to 6 went to Yerong Creek for the Bernie O’Connor Carnival. We played with St Joseph’s, Culcairn and St Patrick’s, Holbrook. It was a great day! The sun was shining, and everyone had lot’s of fun.
The 5/6 boys played footy and came 1st for the whole day. We played against The Rock and the score was 12 to 32. The 3-4 boys came 3rd in the whole day. Well done to the 5/6 and 3/4 girls playing netball who got runners up.
Well done to Ivan and Neve for playing with students they didn’t know.
Congratulations to Blake for winning the furthest kicking competition.
Thank you for the coaches and families who helped on the day.
