A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear St Paul’s Families,

Welcome back to a new school term! It feels so much better seeing our school filled with the energy and enthusiasm of our students once again. We look forward to a term brimming with opportunities for learning, growth, and inspiration.

As I write this newsletter, I am collaborating with other Principals at the 2024 Lutheran Principals of Australia Conference. It has been a time of quality learning and inspiration from keynote speakers, guiding reflections and discussions around the importance of our schools and the power of being in a strong learning community. We have also focused on the importance of being a calming and safe place for our students, staff and families.

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it is wise to remember the importance of finding our 'still waters,' as described in Psalm 23:2, "He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul." These still waters symbolise moments of tranquillity and reflection, where we can pause and reconnect with God’s presence.

These quiet times are essential for nurturing our spiritual health, fostering a sense of gratitude for the blessings we receive, and experiencing the grace that God so freely offers.

As we continue our journey together, let us seek out these still waters, allowing them to restore our souls and fill our hearts with gratitude and grace. By doing so, we strengthen our community and deepen our connection to God’s love.

Yours in Christian service

HAPPENINGS WITH HOLLIE

One thing I really love doing is inviting people into our wonderful school. This week, Sharee Wilson from River Life Church in Henty shared with us a great message in Chapel. Sharee started her message by asking for a volunteer. She chose a strong looking Year 6 lad, who had the task of blowing a balloon, using only a straw from one side of the hall to the other and he had 30 seconds to complete the challenge. He was unsuccessful in this quest. Sharee then chose another student to do the same task but this time with only 10 seconds and a mini-blower instead of the straw. Everyone was very surprised when she pulled this out of her bag! 2 Chronicles 20:1-25 speaks about groups of people (Meunites, Moabites and Ammonites) who ended up fighting against each other rather than the Israelites. God encouraged King Jehoshaphat and the Israelites to not be afraid or discouraged and that they would not even need to fight in this battle. They showed strength and faith in their God.

What’s on at St Paul’s?

Friday Night Gathering

This Friday (2nd Aug) will be our last Gathering for the year. If you can join with us for an evening of sharing and connecting, that would be great. Please bring a Pot luck dinner item to share.

RAS Athletics

We have several students representing our school at RAS Athletics Carnival in Albury this Friday (2nd Aug). Good luck to our athletes competing!

Olympics Afternoon

If you’re anything like me, I have spent many minutes focussed on the Olympics since they began! On Monday 5th August we are having a fun Olympic Day at school. Students have been allocated a country and will compete in their team for the afternoon. Don’t feel like you have to go all out with coloured clothes, just use what you have.

Conferences

We love an opportunity to share and communicate with you, the parents, how your child is doing in the classroom. Hopefully you have a time booked for you to bring your child/ren in and learn what they’ve been up to.

Blessings for your week ahead,

Hollie Kinning

She finished her message with Philippians 4:12-13 which says,

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

How wonderful it is to hear from others and have them share in our weekly Chapel services.

Last day Term 1

YEAR K & 1

What an amazing time we had last Friday celebrating the Kinders’ 100th day of school! All those who dressed up looked amazingly old (especially the teacher)!

Our celebrations were centred on the number 100. We wrote about all the things we have learnt to do in the last 100 days, what we would like to eat 100 of and coloured in 100 gumballs.

We made a train with 100 carriages which was very long! We used our estimating skills to determine whether the containers had more than 100, less than 100 or 100 items in them and stacked 100 cups – very carefully!

Everyone enjoyed our party food – thanks to parents for this. Now we can keep learning in the next 100 days!

Welcome to Term 3!

We have many exciting events to look forward to this term, one being our school concert in Week 6! Our class will be performing a short part of our novel study ‘Charlotte’s Web’. Students will find out their roles this week and an email will be sent home soon regarding costumes. I will also send home the script for students to practise their lines.

This week in Mathematics, our unit is ‘Do I have enough money?’ We are investigating if we have enough money to spend on various items and what our change is or how much more money we need before we can purchase the item. We have been playing money games and becoming familiar with adding and subtracting notes and coins.

Our class will be leading Chapel in Week 5 (Tuesday 20th August) and we would love to see you there!

Congratulations to Rachael and Mahliq for their willingness to compete in the Lions Club Spelling competition last Sunday. They competed as a team and came Runners Up! Well done, Rach and Mahliq!

It has been wonderful welcoming three new students into our class this term! Welcome to Xander (Yr 6), Connor (Yr 4) and James (Yr 4). It’s like they’ve always been part of our team!

Our English Unit this term is called: Convince Me! I Don’t Believe It! We are learning about persuasive texts and how this writing differs to other types/genres. In pairs or individually, students have been planning and performing a Ted Talk or Kid President talk about a positive emotion/feeling/idea, e.g. love, joy, courage, friendship, creativity. We look forward to sharing the finished product with you soon!

As part of this unit of work, we are also working in groups on class debates. The topics are that ‘Cats are better than dogs’ and that ‘Winter is better than Summer’. Some students have found it challenging to agree with their side of the topic, however we have been learning that writing persuasive texts is definitely an art and that this can take place in many different settings, it’s not always just written but can be verbal also.

CREATIVE ARTS

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the Earth!

Students in K-1 have explored beat, pitch, dynamics and tempo throughout the term. They have used body percussion and untuned instruments to perform beat patterns, while also telling stories using high and low sounds/vocal effects. Singing, moving, playing and dancing have been ways in which we have shown our understanding of loud/soft and fast/slow sounds.

Playing tuned percussion has been a highlight for students in the 2/3 class, while exploring the idea of pitch and melody in Music. They have repeated single-note, two-note and three-note melodic patterns, and experimented with creating their own compositions.

The 4/5/6 class has focused on the musical elements of pitch, melody and harmony in their Music lessons. They have had the opportunity to play tuned percussion instruments to explore riffs, chords and vocal and melodic harmonies. Students have also tried their hand at constructing musical arrangements and improvisations.

We hope to showcase some of our skills at our school concert next term.

What a joy it has been this term to see students grow in their skills and confidence in Music and share their joyful noise!

GRANDPARENT'S DAY

We had such a lovely morning spending time with our Grandparents!

The 2/3 class lead our special Grandparents Day Chapel on Tuesday which was followed by a picnic morning tea. We enjoyed playing games, reading to our grandparents and showing them around the school.

Thank you to all our grandparents and family for joining us!

BERNIE O'CONNOR CARNIVAL

On Friday 1st of September, Years 3 to 6 went to Yerong Creek for the Bernie O’Connor Carnival. We played with St Joseph’s, Culcairn and St Patrick’s, Holbrook. It was a great day!  The sun was shining, and everyone had lot’s of fun.

The 5/6 boys played footy and came 1st for the whole day. We played against The Rock and the score was 12 to 32. The 3-4 boys came 3rd in the whole day. Well done to the 5/6 and 3/4 girls playing netball who got runners up.

Well done to Ivan and Neve for playing with students they didn’t know.

Congratulations to Blake for winning the furthest kicking competition.
