A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I had one of those moments last week where my experience on duty reinforced how special our school is. At lunch time, the students were happily playing on the playground, handball courts, then I went for a walk down to the oval to see our students having an awesome time playing soccer... with chickens as goalie!

WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER BUSY & EXCITING TERM AT ST PAUL’S

Yours in Christian service

Brad Moss

Principal

It is a privilege to work in such a positive a school where students are encouraging each other and speaking life into their friends.

Term 4 is a time to consolidate and celebrate the year’s learning for our students. It is especially important for our Year 6 students, as they embark on their final months as a primary school student. We look forward to celebrating our Year 6 students as they prepare for their next educational journey in high school.

Israel and Palestinian Conflict - Supporting Your Child

We are currently being flooded with graphic information and images of the tragedy unfolding in the Gaza Strip. With the quantity of information, it is hard to shelter your child from all forms of media. It is possible for your child to see concerning images or hear unsettling stories.

Supporting your child’s well-being in the context of war in the media is crucial, as exposure to graphic images and distressing news can have a significant impact on their mental and emotional health.

If your child has been exposed to information or images on the tragic situation in Israel, I encourage you to provide a safe space for your child to express their feelings, questions, and concerns. Use age-appropriate information through open and honest discussions about the war and its impact. Monitor and limit/exclude the amount of media coverage your child is exposed to, especially graphic or distressing images.

Talk with your child to discuss stories of resilience, hope, and positive initiatives amid challenging situations. Be available to provide emotional support and reassurance when they need it. Validate their feelings and remind them that it's okay to be upset as it shows empathy and compassion.

If your child shows signs of severe distress, anxiety, or depression related to war in the media, consider involving mental health professionals who specialise in working with children. It is appropriate to inform your child’s teacher so we too are able to encourage and support your child.

Remember that supporting student well-being is an ongoing process. Be patient and empathetic and encourage your child to seek help when needed.

HAPPENINGS WITH HOLLIE

It was wonderful to spend the day on Friday 13th with the majority of our Year 3-6 students at the Cricket Blast Cup day in Culcairn. It made my heart feel happy to see our students take risks, collaborate and show kindness to each other as they participated in, what was for some, a first! Cricket certainly isn’t everyone’s game, but all students really got into it and enjoyed the day, all whilst supporting each other.

One particular change in the new maths syllabus is the importance placed on reasoning in mathematics. There’s a lot to it and being able to give reasons is so much more than merely describing how students came to an answer.

There are certainly lots of exciting things happening this term! Term 4 sees our current group of Year 6 students finishing their primary school journey, our Year 5 students getting ready to step up into leadership roles and figure out what that means and looks like, Grandparent’s Day, Parent Helper’s Morning Tea, Peer Support, Kinder 2024 transitions, class lead chapel services, Christmas activities and not to mention report writing will soon begin as we reflect on another year of learning and growth.

Staff began the term collaborating with each other on all things maths related. Our Learning Intentions for the day were:

Blessings for a terrific term in collaboration together.

As the end of the term becomes closer, we are beginning to prepare our students for transition into their next learning journey. To ensure that these transitions are as successful as possible, it is important that our Team 6 finish the year strong and with confidence to progress to the next year level. The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone (for both parents and children) as it coincides with the transition from childhood to adolescence. This could be a turbulent time for families as everyone adjusts to changes in their personal, social and educational environments.

Here at St Paul’s Henty, we foster collaborative partnerships with secondary schools to ensure that your child feeling confident, able to ask questions and have a positive transition to secondary school.

In addition to that, there are some great links to transition on our website which I have included below. SchoolTV is a valuable resource and provides plenty of information on, not only for primary to secondary transitions, but for kindergarten and across stages.

Some advice in making friendships could be helpful during orientation – and even though we come from a small country community, some children may find it difficult initially to connect with others in a new environment. Parents may like to have a conversation with their children and give them some tips on, and practice in making friends. This could be through role play at home, asking questions to show interest in others and smiling a lot is some simple advice that may help your child settle in at their new school in the first few weeks. Of course, please get in contact with us if you have any concerns over your child’s transition so we can ensure their experience during orientation is positive and they have confidence moving onto the next chapter in their school journey.

WELLBEING WITH SARA

YEAR K & 1

It has been lovely to see all the K/1 smiling faces back for more learning and fun this term!

We have started to read a class novel – James and the Giant Peach. As this is the first experience of a novel with few pictures, they are encouraged to try and imagine the pictures in their mind. I love the groans when I close the book at the end of the chapter, when they really want me to keep reading. It’s great to know that they are invested in the storyline!

On Wednesday we had our second Kinder transition morning. It was lovely to welcome Wylie to our new Kinder cohort for next year. We looked at shapes and numbers and did lots of fun activities based on this theme.

Hollie, Felicity & Debbie

This term we are having a large Science focus in the 2/3/4 class. We have two units on the go, one continued from last term and a new one has just begun.

We have been talking about energy forms – kinetic, electrical and chemical energies and how heat is produced and transferred through conduction convection and radiation.

We had some fun watching some reactions take place in a skittle experiment…

From time to time, Mrs Zweck brings some chickens into class. Some of us enjoyed spending time with the very cute little chickens.

Hopefully you received our class newsletter and have had a chance to take a look at some of the things happening in the 2/3/4 room.

This term is an exciting term for the 5/6 class! Year 6 are in their final term of primary school and the Year 5 students have begun preparing for the leadership speeches for 2024. A few highlights to look forward to this term…

Year 6 began the process of planning their peer support sessions this week. Peer support is a fantastic way to build on the social and emotional skills of each student in the school while fostering skills in leadership.

Every student in Year 6 will lead a small group of students from across age groups to maximise connections across the grades. The leaders are responsible for designing and planning their sessions around the theme of friendship.

I am pleased that each Year 6 student has approached this opportunity positively. I look forward to sharing their progress with you.

THE MAGIC OF WIRADJURI COUNTRY

Mr Greg Packer, Land Services Officer in the Riverina, paid a visit to St Paul’s to present the students who participated in The Magic of Wiradjuri Country photography competition with a beautifully painted nulla-nulla.

An exhibition of the prize winning entries is on a tour of local libraries in the Riverina at the moment and will be at the Henty Library in the coming months.
